Who is Guan Shi Yin Pu Sa
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (GUANSHIYIN PUSA)
Guanshiyin Pusa or Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva* is one of the four best known Bodhisattvas in Mahayana Buddhism. Widely venerated by many as the embodiment of the universal compassion, Guanshiyin Pusa means the Bodhisattva who hears the pleas for help from those in distress or suffering in the world. Bodhisattva save all beings and lead them to the path of enlightenment, which always bring us across the sea of woes safely without fail.
* A Bodhisattva is someone who is on the path of practice towards Enlightenment. It also refers to a being who deliberately postpones his full enlightenment in order to help other sentient beings and show them the path to Enlightenment.
There are three commemorative days for Guanshiyin Pusa that are observed by the Mahayana Buddhist community in a year. The 19th day of the 2nd lunar month is celebrated by many as Bodhisattva’s birthday; the 19th day of the 6th lunar month is widely commemorated as Bodhisattva’s Enlightenment Day; while the 19th day of the 9th lunar month is observed as Bodhisattva’s Renunciation Day. This is based on the life of Princess Miao Shan as one of Guanshiyin Pusa’s manifestations which is widely believed by the Chinese.
